D.C. has a winning pro sports team, but it’s not what you think. The District’s professional women’s ultimate frisbee team is headed to the Championship this weekend ranked number one. We spoke with former player and a current consultant for the team, Carolyn Clendenin, about its secret to success.

How is DC Shadow doing this year?

“DC Shadow has had another terrific season. We won the Premier Ultimate League East Division, and are ranked number one in the league’s power rankings. Our high-powered offense led the league in scoring, and our defense tied for second in fewest points allowed. This season, we outscored our opponents by a league-leading 48 points. We look forward to playing in front of our hometown fans this weekend and bringing home the Championship trophy.”

What makes the D.C. Frisbee community special?

“For one, the D.C. area is home to a ton of talented athletes. Last year, four club teams in the D.C. area earned spots at the National Championships – an incredibly difficult feat. It’s also rare for a city to have so many different options to play ultimate frisbee. There are youth teams, pick-up groups, recreational leagues, competitive club teams, and professional teams.

Off the field, D.C. has a very friendly, service-oriented ultimate community. They strive to welcome all people into the sport and create a fun, inclusive atmosphere.”

How do you suggest people get involved with Ultimate Frisbee in D.C.?

“Folks who are completely new to the game can sign up for beginner leagues or find pick-up games throughout the city. People who would prefer to support from the sidelines can purchase tickets to DC Shadow’s upcoming Championship weekend, buy our gear, and follow our team on social media for information about future seasons.”
