January is my least favorite month. The holidays are behind us; my New Year's resolutions are crumbling. I bulk up on planners I’ll never use because surely THAT’S why 2023 flopped.
But luckily, D.C. has a myriad of ways to get outside, get cozy, and get creative so you can avoid the January slump. Here are a few favorites from our “Guide To January in D.C.”
Go Ice Skating
No matter your skill level, ice skating is objectively fun and a great way to get outdoors in the winter. I love the Georgetown rink because it has lots of close-by dining and shopping options, but the rinks at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden and The Wharf are just as lovely.
Have a Bonfire in Rock Creek Park
Have a fire pit party in Rock Creek Park! Reserve a free picnic area on the NPS website, bring some hot cider and marshmallows, order pizza, and you have yourself an ideal Sunday.
Get Artsy at J Studio
Get creative at this new community art studio in Truxton Circle. $30 will get you a crafting session with full access to all their arts supplies like paints, collage materials, pastels, and more. Make sure to book your session in advance!

Try Dry January
D.C. bars are seriously upping their game when it comes to no-ABV drinks. Death & Co, The Green Zone, Silver Lyan, and Residents have particularly creative non-alc menus. Even if you don’t make it the full month, studies show dry-ish January still leads to healthier drinking habits throughout the year.
Munch at Winter Restaurant Week
Starting Jan. 15, dozens of D.C. restaurants will be serving up $40 - $65 three-course dinners and $25 - $35 lunches. It’s a great time to try out more upscale places at a reasonable price. Several new restaurants are participating, including Any Day Now, Ceibo, and Hiraya.
Watch a Show at the Kennedy Center
Frozen the Musical is at the Kennedy Center all January, an absolutely enormous production that is fun no matter what age. If Disney isn’t your thing, try out one of the various pop music concerts or operas coming through the theater this month.
