Quite frankly, if you're bored during D.C. summer, that’s a skill issue. There are so many fun events this season and the best ones are completely free. Here’s how to make the most of D.C. summer while keeping your wallet intact.

Go Social Dancing

The club is so 2018. The Wharf has free themed dance nights with live music so you can learn everything from line dancing to salsa. Glen Echo Park has a monthly square dancing session with music by a traditional stringband. Or, join a free salsa class in Malcolm X Park.

Learn To Fish

Head to Anacostia Park for a community fishing session every other Saturday this summer. You can bring your own gear or borrow some. All skill levels are welcome.

Become a Jazz Connoisseur

D.C. has an obsession with free jazz concerts. Jazz in the Garden is the most popular, but it’s not the only game in town (and may even be overrated 👀). Alexandria has a free jazz festival on June 14. Or head to Metropolitan Park for their free weekly jazz concert by the DC Jazz Festival.

Catch a Free Outdoor Concert

For those not feeling jazzy, there are plenty of other options. The Rock The Dock series at The Wharf happens every Wednesday all summer with a huge array of genres. Music in the Circle makes Dupont into its own amazing live local music venue every Saturday. Lastly, Capitol Riverfront Summer Concert Series is back at The Yards Park this summer starting in July.

See an Outdoor Movie

It’s basically required for every Washingtonian to spend at least one bug festooned evening watching a free movie during summer. Our favorite venues are Alethia Tanner Park (huge screen!), The Wharf (on the dock = fewer bugs), and the Congressional Cemetery (ooOoooO!)

Attend a Wonky Local Festival

Go to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival from July 2-7 for a classic, if slightly touristy, D.C. experience. For something more local, check out the Lotus and Water Lily Festival July 19-21 at Kenilworth Gardens to see the famous blooming marshes. Or, jive to local tunes at the Home Rule Music Festival at The Parks at Walter Reed on June 21.

Get Fit For Free

Gym memberships in D.C. are mega expensive. Luckily, in summer, they’re hardly necessary. FITDC has a ton of free weekly offerings with everything from running to DanceFit to breathwork. There is free weekly yoga at Union Market, National Harbor, and UPSIDE on Moore. And there are tons of free running and hiking clubs!
